Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
The episode opens with the ranch facing a worsening outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. As more cattle become affected, Rip becomes convinced that the bull purchased at auction is responsible for bringing the disease onto the property.
He’s no longer willing to believe this happened by chance.
Beth, meanwhile, is focused on Carter. She wants to shield him from the grim reality unfolding at the ranch, but Carter has other priorities. His attention is fixed on Oreana, and the two have become increasingly close.
When Beth returns home, she discovers Carter and Oreana together in bed. During the confrontation that follows, she learns another important detail: Oreana is a Jackson.
That information immediately raises Beth’s guard.
She personally drives Oreana back home and spends the trip making her feelings clear. Beth warns her not to hurt Carter and promises consequences if she does.
The tension only escalates when they arrive at the Jackson property.
Beulah approaches Beth and suggests they leave their differences behind. She offers a drink and attempts to smooth things over, but Beth refuses. Even when Beulah reminds her that Rio Paloma is a small town where people inevitably cross paths, Beth refuses to soften her stance and leaves.
With bigger concerns on her mind, Beth begins looking into the ranch’s recent cattle purchase.
She contacts Dr. Poole, the veterinarian supposedly responsible for examining the animals before the sale and handling the required blood tests.
The conversation produces a shocking discovery.
Dr. Poole has no knowledge of the auction whatsoever.
The answer confirms what Rip has been fearing all along: something about the sale was fraudulent.
While Beth investigates, Carter begins searching for work and is directed toward a rancher named Danny Ray.
Danny Ray quickly welcomes him and introduces Carter to his own brand of ranch-life education. The lessons involve drinking, rope work, and a general philosophy about learning through experience.
Carter also encounters one of Danny Ray’s more unusual possessions—an African leopard named Xena.
It’s one of the episode’s stranger moments, but it certainly leaves an impression.
Later, Beth contacts Carter and surprisingly encourages him to spend the evening with Oreana. She even tells him not to worry about a curfew.
The reason soon becomes obvious.
Beth wants Carter occupied while the ranch handles its growing emergency.
Elsewhere, Everett receives a call about a mare at the Jackson ranch that is supposedly preparing to foal. With Doc Sturgess away, Everett is asked to help.
Once he arrives, however, he realizes there is no mare in distress.
The call was simply an excuse.
Beulah wanted to see him.
The two share drinks and spend time talking about old memories, aging, and thoughts about eventually stepping away from ranch life. Their discussion shifts toward Chet and eventually to Rob-Will’s rehabilitation.
The conversation reveals how much history exists between them.
Before Everett leaves, the pair share a quiet moment together and hold hands.
Later that night, Rob-Will returns to the ranch just as Oreana prepares to sneak out.
The episode then turns its full attention back to the crisis that has been building all hour.
With the disease spreading and no safe alternative available, the ranchers prepare for the unthinkable.
The herd is gathered and moved away from the ranch while Zachariah and Azul dig a massive pit.
Everyone understands what is about to happen.
The sequence is brutal and heartbreaking.
The ranch hands line up and begin putting down the infected cattle. Rip struggles with the reality of the situation but knows there is no other choice.
Before firing one final shot, he tells the animals they don’t deserve what is happening.
It’s easily one of the most emotional scenes of the season so far.
As devastating as the loss is, another revelation arrives shortly afterward.
Beth uncovers evidence that the veterinary documentation associated with the cattle purchase was forged.
The ranch wasn’t simply unlucky.
They were cheated.
The cattle broker knowingly sold them livestock backed by fake paperwork.
Rip’s reaction is immediate.
Enraged by the deception, he confronts the broker and forces him to leave Rio Paloma. Before the night is over, Rip and Beth burn down the man’s trailer and leave him behind.
The act provides a sense of revenge, but it doesn’t solve the ranch’s financial disaster.
The herd is gone.
The future suddenly looks uncertain.
The episode closes with Rip calling Everett and informing him of everything that has happened. The news lands heavily, bringing the hour to a somber end.
Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 Review
Episode 4 delivers the biggest emotional blow of the season to date.
The disease outbreak has been hanging over the ranch for a while, but seeing the situation reach its final outcome is still difficult to watch. The cattle aren’t treated as numbers on a balance sheet. They’re shown as part of the ranch’s identity, which makes their loss feel personal.
The mass culling sequence is easily the episode’s strongest moment.
I found myself focusing on Rip throughout that entire scene. His frustration and sadness come through without the need for lengthy speeches, and the performance carries much of the episode’s emotional weight.
The hour also continues developing its supporting characters. Carter’s storyline expands through his interactions with Danny Ray, while Oreana’s influence on him becomes increasingly noticeable. Whether Danny Ray remains important later or not, his scenes provide a glimpse into another side of ranch life.
Meanwhile, the scenes involving Everett and Beulah add a quieter emotional layer. Their shared history gives those conversations a sense of authenticity that contrasts nicely with the larger drama unfolding elsewhere.
The biggest surprise comes from Beth’s investigation. Learning that the paperwork was forged transforms the outbreak from a tragic accident into an act of deception. That twist adds another level of anger and frustration to an already painful situation.
By the end of the episode, the Dutton Ranch is facing a challenge unlike anything seen so far this season. The loss of the herd leaves major questions about how the ranch can recover.
One thing is certain: after Episode 4, nothing feels quite the same anymore.
