The pressure finally reaches a breaking point in Episode 4 of Dutton Ranch. What starts as a growing concern over the health of the herd soon turns into a full-scale disaster, forcing Rip and Beth to make decisions that will affect the future of the ranch for a long time to come.

Carter also encounters one of Danny Ray’s more unusual possessions—an African leopard named Xena.

It’s one of the episode’s stranger moments, but it certainly leaves an impression.

Later, Beth contacts Carter and surprisingly encourages him to spend the evening with Oreana. She even tells him not to worry about a curfew.

The reason soon becomes obvious.

Beth wants Carter occupied while the ranch handles its growing emergency.

Elsewhere, Everett receives a call about a mare at the Jackson ranch that is supposedly preparing to foal. With Doc Sturgess away, Everett is asked to help.

Once he arrives, however, he realizes there is no mare in distress.

The two share drinks and spend time talking about old memories, aging, and thoughts about eventually stepping away from ranch life. Their discussion shifts toward Chet and eventually to Rob-Will’s rehabilitation.

The conversation reveals how much history exists between them.

Before Everett leaves, the pair share a quiet moment together and hold hands.

Later that night, Rob-Will returns to the ranch just as Oreana prepares to sneak out.

The episode then turns its full attention back to the crisis that has been building all hour.

With the disease spreading and no safe alternative available, the ranchers prepare for the unthinkable.

The herd is gathered and moved away from the ranch while Zachariah and Azul dig a massive pit.

Everyone understands what is about to happen.

The sequence is brutal and heartbreaking.

The ranch hands line up and begin putting down the infected cattle. Rip struggles with the reality of the situation but knows there is no other choice.

Before firing one final shot, he tells the animals they don’t deserve what is happening.

I found myself focusing on Rip throughout that entire scene. His frustration and sadness come through without the need for lengthy speeches, and the performance carries much of the episode’s emotional weight.

The hour also continues developing its supporting characters. Carter’s storyline expands through his interactions with Danny Ray, while Oreana’s influence on him becomes increasingly noticeable. Whether Danny Ray remains important later or not, his scenes provide a glimpse into another side of ranch life.

Meanwhile, the scenes involving Everett and Beulah add a quieter emotional layer. Their shared history gives those conversations a sense of authenticity that contrasts nicely with the larger drama unfolding elsewhere.

The biggest surprise comes from Beth’s investigation. Learning that the paperwork was forged transforms the outbreak from a tragic accident into an act of deception. That twist adds another level of anger and frustration to an already painful situation.

By the end of the episode, the Dutton Ranch is facing a challenge unlike anything seen so far this season. The loss of the herd leaves major questions about how the ranch can recover.
