I knew the finale of The WONDERfools would be messy in the best way possible, but I still wasn’t prepared for how much chaos Episode 8 packed into one hour. The episode jumps straight into panic mode and barely gives anyone time to breathe. Every major character gets thrown into danger, alliances break apart, and the entire town ends up seconds away from disaster.
At the center of it all is Chae-ni, who spends almost the entire finale trying to save everyone while the world around her completely falls apart.

Chae-ni Escapes the Church With Gyeon-un
The finale opens inside the church as Chae-ni and Gyeon-un try to escape the crowd surrounding them. Gyeon-un can’t stop worrying about his family, but Chae-ni focuses on getting him out alive first.
Using the last coffee jelly, she teleports him safely outside his home.
Instead of staying safe herself, though, Chae-ni goes right back into the church. That honestly says everything about her character.
She tries scaring the churchgoers with a chainsaw, but the whole thing immediately backfires when the chainsaw breaks. Even in the middle of disaster, this drama still keeps its weird sense of humor alive.
Before the crowd can overwhelm her, Jun-mo and Jeon-bok burst into the church and use the speaker system to interrupt Ju-ran’s brainwashing spell. Once the sound spreads through the building, the church members finally stop acting like zombies.
Un-jeong Confronts Dr Ha
Meanwhile, the basement lab becomes another disaster zone.
Un-jeong confronts Dr Ha and finally expresses his anger over the experiments forced on him as a child. Dr Ha refuses to apologize and instead reveals his larger goal: spreading chemicals across Haeseong to create more people with powers and possibly another Child of Eternity.
That reveal made the stakes feel much bigger than before.
When the guards try shooting Un-jeong, he uses his powers to redirect the bullets back toward Dr Ha. The attack kills Dr Ha and ignites the lab in flames.
Chae-ni hears the explosion and instantly teleports into the burning basement to rescue survivors while desperately trying to find Un-jeong.
At the same time, Ju-ran attempts to revive Dr Ha using Chae-ni’s blood sample. The attempt fails, but she still orders Ho-ran to continue the plan without telling her the truth about Dr Ha and Pal-ho.
Elsewhere, Sang-moo manages to drag an injured Un-jeong out of the fire before things completely collapse.
Ho-ran Turns Jun-mo Against His Friends
Outside the church, Chae-ni explains the apocalypse plan to Jeon-bok and Jun-mo. But before they can react, Ho-ran appears and brainwashes Jun-mo along with the rest of his team.
Suddenly, Jeon-bok becomes their target.
Chae-ni quickly teleports Jeon-bok away from danger, but because of her strange connection to the church, she accidentally teleports herself back there again.
This time, she arrives on a telehandler, which somehow feels perfectly normal for this drama at this point.
Gyeon-un Learns the Truth About the Parade
Elsewhere, Ro-bin wakes up and realizes something terrible is happening across town.
At City Hall, preparations continue for the millennium parade. Gyeon-un rushes there and desperately tries convincing Mi-hui and Cheong not to attend, but they ignore his warnings. Cheong even looks embarrassed by his behavior.
Later, Gyeon-un reunites with Chae-ni and Ro-bin at the restaurant to figure out Ho-ran’s real objective. They realize the entire town gathering at the parade would make the perfect target.
While searching for the chemicals, Chae-ni and Ro-bin suddenly run into Un-jeong. At first, it looks like he survived safely, but they soon discover Ju-ran is controlling him.
Chae-ni Refuses to Abandon Un-jeong
Ju-ran forces Un-jeong to attack Chae-ni while Ro-bin protects her using his abilities.
At the same time, Gyeon-un stays near the parade to protect his family. When he hears employees discussing the fireworks scheduled for midnight, he suddenly realizes the chemicals will spread through the fireworks themselves.
That moment completely changed the direction of the finale.
Everything spirals into chaos after that revelation. Ro-bin and Un-jeong clash while Gyeon-un races through town trying to keep Mi-hui and Cheong safe.
Ju-ran even forces Un-jeong to choke Chae-ni, but Chae-ni teleports him away long enough to break Ho-ran’s influence over him.
Unfortunately, Ho-ran simply shifts her attention toward the rest of Haeseong and begins brainwashing even more residents.
Haeseong Falls Into Complete Chaos
Gyeon-un tells Mi-hui and Cheong to hide before rushing back into battle beside his friends.
Together, Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un fight against the brainwashed townspeople under Ho-ran’s control.
One of the most satisfying moments comes when Cheong finally witnesses everything and realizes her father truly is a superhero. After constantly being dismissed throughout the series, Gyeon-un finally gets recognition from his daughter.
With only thirty minutes left before midnight, the group splits up to stop Ju-ran.
Gyeon-un confronts her directly, but she throws him off a building during the fight. At the same time, Ju-ran’s condition worsens because of how heavily she has been using her powers.
She eventually collapses while coughing blood, and Ho-ran panics trying to help her.
Ho-ran Dies in Front of Un-jeong
As Ju-ran weakens, the brainwashing spell across town finally breaks.
But Ho-ran still refuses to give up.
Using hallucinations, she disguises herself as Chae-ni to get close to Un-jeong. During the confusion, a church elder accidentally stabs Ho-ran.
Once the illusion disappears, Ho-ran dies in Un-jeong’s arms while Ju-ran helplessly watches.
I honestly didn’t expect that scene to hit as hard as it did.
The Final Battle to Stop the Chemicals
Before losing consciousness, Ju-ran casts one final spell and forces the citizens of Haeseong beneath a blimp carrying the chemicals.
Un-jeong tries stopping the blimp with his powers, but he’s too weak to hold it alone.
That leads to the finale’s last desperate plan.
Chae-ni asks Ro-bin and Gyeon-un to launch her toward the blimp while Un-jeong promises to catch her if she falls.
Gyeon-un helps her climb onto the blimp before jumping back down himself. Un-jeong catches him safely while Chae-ni teleports the blimp away moments before midnight.
Ju-ran finally gives up, and the townspeople regain control of themselves.
As the clock strikes midnight, Haeseong celebrates the beginning of the new millennium without realizing how close the town came to destruction.
Chae-ni Returns After Weeks Away
After saving everyone, Chae-ni disappears completely.
Three weeks pass without any sign of her. Jeon-bok, Ro-bin, Gyeon-un, and Un-jeong all struggle with her absence and eventually organize a memorial service for her.
Then the finale delivers one final emotional surprise.
Chae-ni suddenly appears during the memorial, reuniting with everyone. Un-jeong immediately runs to find her, and the two embrace as the others look on in relief.
The episode ends with Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Gyeon-un still together as a team.
The epilogue also reveals that the Church of Eternal Salvation remains under investigation while Un-jeong dreams about reuniting with his mother.
Then comes the biggest twist of all.
Dr Ha wakes up inside the underground lab.
Episode 8 Review
This finale was chaotic from beginning to end, but I honestly think that’s exactly why it worked. The show never tried becoming a serious grounded superhero drama. Instead, it leaned fully into its weird energy and let the characters carry the emotional side of the story.
Gyeon-un ended up being one of the highlights for me. Watching his daughter finally see him as a real hero felt surprisingly satisfying after everything he went through earlier in the season.
I also liked that the finale left several unanswered questions behind. Dr Ha waking up again obviously hints at another season, and the missing chemicals still feel important moving forward.
Some emotional moments could have landed harder, especially after Chae-ni’s disappearance, but the episode still managed to balance comedy, action, and emotional scenes better than I expected.
By the end, The WONDERfools felt like a superhero story that fully accepted how ridiculous it could be, and somehow that made the finale even more entertaining.
