The first episode of Go For It, Nakamura! introducing its lovable protagonist and the central conflict that drives the story. At its heart, this is a simple tale about a shy teenager trying to get closer to the person he likes. Yet the way the anime presents that familiar situation makes it surprisingly funny, relatable, and charming.

Nakamura's Crush Begins at First Sight
The episode opens with Nakamura introducing himself. He's a 15-year-old freshman attending Hoshimi High School, and he's completely smitten with one of his classmates, Hirose Aiki.
For Nakamura, it was love at first sight.
Ever since seeing Hirose during the school's entrance ceremony, he hasn't been able to stop thinking about him. Everything about Hirose catches his attention, from his curly hair to his bright eyes and carefree personality. While most students are focused on adjusting to high school life, Nakamura spends his days thinking about the boy sitting in the same classroom.
There's just one problem.
A month has already passed since school started, and Nakamura still hasn't spoken a single word to him.
Not one conversation. Not even a simple greeting.
Realizing he can't continue like this forever, Nakamura decides today's the day he'll finally make a move.
A Simple Invitation Turns Into Disaster
After class ends, Nakamura prepares himself mentally to approach Hirose. In his imagination, everything goes perfectly. He confidently walks over, starts a conversation, and casually invites him to visit a café together.
The plan sounds flawless inside his head.
Reality, however, is a different story.
The moment Nakamura tries to approach Hirose, his confidence completely disappears. Even something as small as Hirose accidentally dropping his eraser is enough to send Nakamura into a spiral of overthinking.
Every possible action suddenly feels wrong.
Every opportunity slips away before he can take it.
Eventually, Nakamura gathers enough courage to walk over to Hirose. Unfortunately, his timing couldn't be worse. Just as he stands behind him, Hirose suddenly gets up, startling both of them.
Caught off guard and unable to say anything, Nakamura freezes.
Embarrassment immediately takes over, forcing him to retreat to the back of the classroom without accomplishing anything.
At this point, I was already laughing at how painfully accurate the anime captures teenage crush anxiety. Nakamura isn't dealing with any huge obstacle. He's simply fighting his own nerves, and somehow that feels even more difficult.
The Handkerchief Incident
Although the first attempt ends in failure, Nakamura isn't ready to give up.
As Hirose prepares to leave, he accidentally drops his handkerchief. Nakamura instantly sees this as the perfect opportunity to finally start a conversation.
Fate seems to be helping him for once.
Then a girl notices the handkerchief before he can reach it.
Panicking at the thought of losing his chance, Nakamura makes a decision that can only be described as spectacularly terrible.
He runs toward the handkerchief and deliberately steps on it to prevent the girl from picking it up first.
The plan technically works.
The execution is another matter entirely.
Instead of creating a natural conversation, Nakamura ends up returning the handkerchief in the most awkward way imaginable. What should have been a simple interaction becomes an unforgettable moment of secondhand embarrassment.
Watching this scene felt like witnessing a train wreck in slow motion. You know it's a bad idea, Nakamura probably knows it's a bad idea, but somehow he commits to it anyway.
And that's exactly what makes it so funny.
Encouragement From Icchan
Back at home, Nakamura can't stop replaying the incident in his head.
The embarrassment follows him long after school ends, leaving him convinced that he completely ruined his chance.
Thankfully, he has someone to talk to.
Or rather, something.
Nakamura shares his frustrations with his pet octopus, Icchan. Spending time with his unusual companion helps him calm down and recover from the day's humiliation.
By the end of the evening, he's managed to rebuild his confidence.
Tomorrow will be another opportunity.
Cooking Class Creates a New Opportunity
The next day brings a cooking class, giving Nakamura another chance to interact with Hirose.
At least, that's the plan.
As expected, things don't go smoothly.
Instead of making progress, Nakamura becomes distracted by his thoughts and ends up making mistakes during class. His attention remains fixed on Hirose, leaving him unable to focus on the actual assignment.
Then an unexpected situation changes everything.
The teacher is briefly called away, leaving the students unsupervised. While looking around the classroom, the students discover three octopuses.
Most of the class reacts with disgust.
Nakamura reacts very differently.
The Octopus Rescue Mission
Rather than being grossed out, Nakamura immediately becomes fascinated by the octopuses. He picks one up and can't stop admiring how cute it is.
His enthusiasm eventually catches Hirose's attention.
Curious about Nakamura's reaction, Hirose decides to hold one as well. To his surprise, he finds the octopus adorable too.
Little by little, the atmosphere in the room changes.
The students begin looking at the animals differently.
Soon another concern appears. Since they're in a cooking class, some students start wondering whether the octopuses are supposed to become ingredients.
Not wanting that to happen, Hirose suggests saving them.
He decides to move them somewhere with water, believing he's helping. Before he can do it, Nakamura suddenly shouts that fresh water would kill them.
It's one of the first moments where Nakamura speaks up without hesitation.
His knowledge prevents Hirose from making a mistake, and for once, Nakamura's impulsive reaction actually works in his favor.
As they continue discussing what to do, a teacher named Otogiri arrives and clears up the misunderstanding.
The octopuses aren't meant for cooking at all.
They belong to the biology class and somehow escaped into the cooking room.
With the mystery solved, Otogiri takes the animals back where they belong.
Nakamura Finally Gets a Real Conversation
The octopus incident unexpectedly gives Nakamura exactly what he's been hoping for.
After everything is settled, Hirose approaches him directly.
The two talk about the octopuses, and Hirose thanks Nakamura for helping. It's a small interaction, but for someone who spent an entire month unable to say a single word to his crush, it feels like a major victory.
Then Hirose notices one final octopus that was left behind.
As he prepares to return it, the creature suddenly sprays ink all over Nakamura.
The unexpected attack leaves Nakamura covered in ink while Hirose bursts into laughter.
For anyone else, it would be terrible luck.
For Nakamura, it still counts as progress.
At least Hirose is laughing with him now.
Episode 1 Review
I came away from the premiere pleasantly surprised by how effective its simple premise is.
Go For It, Nakamura! doesn't rely on complicated drama or huge emotional twists. Instead, it focuses on the painfully familiar experience of having a crush and not knowing what to do about it. Nearly every awkward situation Nakamura finds himself in feels exaggerated just enough to be hilarious while still remaining relatable.
The standout moment is easily the handkerchief scene. It's uncomfortable, ridiculous, and incredibly funny all at once. I actually found myself cringing and laughing at the same time because the situation spirals so much further than it should.
What also stood out to me was the anime's visual identity. The series embraces a distinctly retro aesthetic that gives it a lot of personality from the very beginning. The opening, ending, and overall presentation complement that style nicely, creating a warm atmosphere that fits the story's lighthearted tone.
Most importantly, the episode understands what makes teenage romance stories work. Nakamura constantly imagines conversations that never happen, overthinks every interaction, and turns small opportunities into giant obstacles. Those feelings are universal, which makes his journey easy to connect with.
After just one episode, Go For It, Nakamura! feels like a sweet and entertaining slice-of-life romance built around all the awkward mistakes people make when they're trying to get closer to someone they like. If the series continues balancing humor, charm, and heartfelt moments this well, it could become one of the most enjoyable romance anime of the season.
