Marriagetoxin Episode 1 Recap and Review: A Deadly Assassin Starts His Search for Love

Marriagetoxin Episode 1 Recap

The episode opens with a mafia boss celebrating a successful operation alongside his associates. The atmosphere is cruel from the start, with the group humiliating others while enjoying their victory party.

Before they begin drinking, a wine taster checks the wine and confirms that everything is safe. The group happily raises their glasses, but only moments later, the boss suddenly begins choking. As panic spreads through the room, no one notices a waiter quietly leaving the building.

That waiter is Hikaru Gero.

Gero is an assassin from the Poison Clan, a family known for its mastery of deadly toxins. Rather than poisoning the wine directly, he spent months manipulating the wine taster's senses. By gradually exposing the taster to one of his poisons, Gero ensured that the man would unknowingly approve the fatal drink.

After completing the job, Gero talks with his sister, Akari. The conversation quickly shifts to a topic he would rather avoid: marriage.

The clan needs an heir. Unfortunately, the situation is complicated. Akari is dating a woman, while Gero struggles to imagine anyone ever wanting to date him. The responsibility of continuing the family line hangs heavily over both of them.

Later, Gero receives a call from his friend, Bug Master. Expecting another casual conversation between two bachelors, Gero is caught off guard when Bug Master reveals that he may be getting married soon.

The news leaves Gero shaken.

Soon afterward, he accepts a new assignment involving a marriage swindler named Mei Kinosaki. The client wants revenge and hires Gero to torture Mei with poison before eventually killing the target.

As Gero begins carrying out the job, Mei desperately tries to appeal to his emotions. Mei claims to resemble Gero's first love and searches for any weakness that might earn sympathy.

Gero pretends not to care, but internally he's surprised. For a brief moment, he wonders whether Mei might actually be interested in him.

Then everything changes.

Akari suddenly calls and reveals that she plans to break up with her girlfriend. Their grandmother has ordered her to marry someone from another assassin family instead.

Gero immediately rejects the idea. He argues that Akari shouldn't abandon someone who genuinely loves her. Determined to solve the problem himself, he makes a bold decision.

Gathering every ounce of courage he has, Gero proposes to Mei.

His reasoning is simple. Mei has been earning money through relationships with men in order to pay for a brother's medical bills. Gero promises he can help financially, believing marriage might solve both of their problems.

The result is immediate and embarrassing.

Mei laughs directly in his face.

The proposal is rejected without hesitation, and Mei explains that this is absolutely not how someone convinces another person to get married. Still, instead of walking away, Mei surprisingly offers relationship advice and points out several mistakes in Gero's approach.

Before the conversation can continue, Gero's client arrives.

Angry that the assassination has not been completed, the client threatens both Gero and Mei. Gero ignores him and presents a new proposal to Mei. This time, he isn't asking for marriage. Instead, he wants help finding a girlfriend.

That answer enrages the client.

The situation quickly turns violent as the man attempts to kill them. In response, Gero injects himself with a special poison. The substance dramatically increases his speed, allowing him to evade a hail of bullets before poisoning both the client and his entire group.

Watching the fight unfold, Mei becomes impressed by Gero's abilities and finally agrees to help.

Then comes one of the episode's biggest surprises.

Mei Kinosaki is actually a man.

He had been disguising himself as a woman because it helped him earn more money.

I have to admit, this reveal completely caught me off guard. The episode spends enough time building expectations in one direction before suddenly flipping everything upside down.

Now officially partners, Mei takes Gero to a matchmaking event and introduces him to several women. Unfortunately, things go exactly as badly as you'd expect.

Gero struggles to smile naturally. Every attempt either looks intimidating or painfully awkward. One by one, the women reject him.

Even moving online doesn't help.

When they try dating apps, Gero still can't identify what makes him attractive as a potential partner. His shyness prevents meaningful conversations, and every interaction becomes uncomfortable.

Later, while trying to relax, Gero spends time cleaning a bathroom. Mei notices that the cleaning products he uses are remarkably effective.

That's when Gero proudly reveals another hidden talent.

He creates the products himself.

When he puts his mind to it, he can even develop cleaning chemicals strong enough to melt iron.

As the day comes to an end, the two part ways.

The peace lasts only seconds.

Mei is suddenly kidnapped by a group connected to Gero's former client. Specifically, the kidnapper is the man's brother, who wants answers after his sibling abandoned the business following the encounter with Gero and Mei.

Seeking revenge, he captures Mei and demands information.

Unfortunately for him, he has no idea who he's dealing with.

While threatening his hostage inside a moving vehicle, the driver suddenly panics. A lone pedestrian is standing directly in their path.

That pedestrian is Gero.

Armed with his specialized cleaning chemicals, he launches himself onto the vehicle and uses the substances to slice the car into two sections. The damaged vehicle loses control and crashes into the water below.

Gero successfully rescues Mei.

Afterward, he sincerely thanks Mei for helping him throughout the day. Mei responds with a smile, adds Gero to his contact list, and reassures his new companion.

Their partnership is officially underway.

Marriagetoxin Episode 1 Review

As a premiere, Marriagetoxin throws almost everything at the audience. Action scenes, assassin family politics, relationship comedy, bizarre chemistry-based powers, and emotional character motivations all arrive within a single episode.

Normally, that amount of material would feel overwhelming. Surprisingly, it doesn't.

The episode moves quickly, but I never felt lost. By the end, I had a clear understanding of who Gero is, why marriage matters to him, and how Mei fits into the story moving forward.

The standout moment has to be Mei's reveal. From the moment the character appeared, it seemed like the story might be heading toward a predictable dynamic where Gero saves someone who gradually becomes a romantic interest. Instead, the series uses that expectation as part of a joke and delivers a genuinely funny twist.

What interests me most is the partnership between Gero and Mei. Their goals aren't identical, but they need each other. Watching Mei attempt to turn a socially awkward assassin into dating material has the potential to create some great comedy.

Gero himself is also an easy protagonist to root for. He's incredibly dangerous, yet completely helpless when it comes to romance. That contrast drives much of the episode's humor and gives the story its unique identity.

It's still too early to know whether Marriagetoxin will focus on an ongoing storyline or adopt a more episodic structure. Either way, the first episode leaves a strong impression. If you're looking for a series packed with over-the-top action, unexpected jokes, and a lovable disaster of a main character trying to find love, this opening chapter makes a solid case for sticking around.
